Corrections Officer Terry Reed is the "Cat-Man of Rikers". He feeds all the colonies on the island as well as makes shelters and temporary housing for some of the older or sick cats. Here Officer Reed gets a kiss from Little Baby in one of the many trailers on the island.
Around 1000 feral cats live on Rikers island, NYC's main jail complex. Riker's staff have been working with the Humane Society over the years to spay/neuter the felines, by trap and release programs in order to keep the population down.
An inside facility enables Officer Reed and fellow workers to care for the animals during the winter.
Cats scatter the sea gulls around the Mess Hall on the island's facility.
Some ferals are more friendly than others but stay a safe distance away.
A small young black cat runs out to catch a glimpse of the humans, and quickly runs back to hide with the rest of his colony.
Worried about one of his favorite cats, Officer Reed coaxes his cat to come closer so he can spot any problems.
Inside the cat-house
One of the larger shelters Officer Reed had installed for the cold winter months.
Officer Reed stated that this cat in particular had a habit of jumping into his car when he would visit.
